Day 1-14: India Ashram Yoga Tour
An ashram is a retreat centre with buildings for eating, sleeping, studying, meditating and yoga. Ashrams have been a place of worship, peace, learning and most importantly inner transformation and experience for centuries. Through various practices such as yoga and meditation as well as participation in ancient rituals and traditions, you will be fully immersed in the Ashram lifestyle. Here you will have the opportunity to join traditional fire poojas, Ayurvedic cooking courses, receive ancient Ayurvedic massages and treatments to suit all aliments and help balance the body’s energy points (chakras). With so many ashrams to choose from with varied quality and authenticity, Yoga Travels, with longtime experience in India, provides a tailored trip to bring you to ashrams that will ensure a diverse, streamlined and top quality experience.
Are you ready for this Ashram “experience/vacation”?
Are you ready to take your yoga practice to the next level? Are you ready to possibly be outside of your comfort zone and be humbled by your surroundings? Are you ready to stretch yourself emotionally, physically and spiritually? Are you ready for teachings from Indian swamis answering your BIG questions? If you answered yes to these questions then you are ready for the Yoga Travels Indian Ashram tour.
However, if you expect to have five star accommodation, with boutique hotel rooms, international cuisine and to be comfortable at all times then really this tour is not for you. Ashram life is not glamorous nor are the ashrams luxurious – they are simple and basic.
Yoga Travels strives to bring you real experiences and our Ashram tour has been designed to offer our clients an authentic Indian Ashram experience.
We start our tour in Delhi where we head out by vehicle towards the foothills of the Himalaya mountains, the Haridwar/Rishikesh area, a world famous locality on the sacred Ganges river with some of the oldest and most respected gurus (teachers) worldwide not only for yoga but also Ayurveda, reiki, meditation, music, etc.
Our first stay is at a 3 star hotel to begin our tour in Rishikesh as we attend classes at the ashram in an urban setting. Excellent shopping is available in Rishikesh for all your needs and consultation can be provided for where to get ancient Ayurvedic Indian herbal medicines and other natural items for everyday cleansing and use. Rishikesh is world renowned for these items.
Moreover, if you have specialized requests in terms of treatments or sessions we will liaise with our local contacts to assist you in getting excellent treatments. We will enjoy a variety of daily yoga and meditation classes.
Then we head further into the countryside residing on the banks of the Ganges River. Here we will have more basic accommodation either shared room with attached bath or a single room with shared bath. The rooms are provided with sheets and blankets however if you would like a bit more comfort you may like to bring a silk sleeping liner. The teachings from the swami at this ashram is a full one week yoga course with breathing techniques, various cleansing techniques, chanting, mantras, meditation, different yoga styles along with yoga philosophy group discussions. This ashram is the oldest that we visit (120 years) and as such the most authentic and basic of the three ashrams we visit.
The final ashram is a large beautiful campus set out in the countryside also along the Ganges River. This ashram is quite modern in it’s design and built with great quantities of marble. Here you will experience daily yoga classes, twice daily meditation and daily philosophy discussions with the resident Swami.
Here is an example of a daily Ashram schedule:
6:00 am Collective meditation.
7:00 am Yoga Asanas.
8:00 am Breakfast.
9:00 am Karma Yoga / Study Period.
11:30 am Satsang (questions and answers)

Janice Varuna’s journey into yoga began in the 1990’s with classes in a community centre. And then in 2000 she slowly found her way back to yoga by taking Ayurvedic cooking classes. She experienced a debilitating back injury and was drawn to yoga based on the holistic nature of yoga healing. She started with weekly yoga classes, and slowly healing happened. Inspired by her own healing, yoga became a part of her life. Varuna has studied with teachers around the world, India, Europe, the Americas and all over Asia. Much of her training has been in India where she travels to annually to continue her studies. Having travelled to over 120 countries, Janice Varuna has a wealth of life and travel experiences, and today her focus is on sharing this knowledge and her passion for yoga. In her classes, she leads students through graceful postural sequences and teaches breathing, chanting, meditation and self-awareness.
Janice Varuna’s philosophy is that there are no age or physical limitations that should stop anyone from benefiting from yoga’s incredible power to improve physical wellness and bring emotional peace and clarity. Janice Varuna’s purpose is to guide students as they explore their physical and mental abilities through yoga. Janice Varuna makes her home in Ottawa, Canada.
Peggy Prarena Gillies
Peggy has been practicing yoga for more than 25 years, teaching for 15 years and involved in Yoga Teacher Training for 5 years. What initially began as a supplement to her fitness regime has evolved until now yoga is a part of her daily life that guides her in everything she does. Yoga drew her to India, first as a student of Yogi Vishvketu and later as a part of his teaching team.
As a yoga teacher, she drew on her professional background in adult education, leadership and development training, social work and communication. She believes in teaching from the heart so that each class is infused with passion, energy and joy.
When you do yoga with her, you’ll move and stretch. Starting with the outside layer, the physical body to build strength and flexibility while respecting our individual limitations. Then you’ll go deeper, using breath to take you inside, calming the nervous system and promoting healing. Going deeper still to find stillness, peace and acceptance, producing a feeling of well-being and bliss. For more information, visit Peggy’s website yogawithpeggy.ca
