Nicaragua is Central America’s best hidden secret! It is a land of clay-tiled villages and colonial architecture, of volcanic heat and Caribbean cool, Nicaragua is as charming as it is diverse, enticing as it is unfathomable. With its fiery volcanoes, crystal-clear lagoons, lush cloud forests, immense lakes, stunning beaches, and epic surf – Nicaragua provides the traveller with endless adventure. Home to seven million proud, outspoken inhabitants that continue to reinvent themselves amid unending political, geological, and economic drama.

Much more than a retreat we travel to 3 distinct regions of Nicaragua – the cloud forest in Matagalapa, the vibrant colonial town of Granada, and the pristine beaches near San Juan del Sur.

During this amazing 10 day Nicaragua Yoga Adventure, you will have the opportunity to participate in daily yoga practice led by Melissa Krieger and designed to compliment our surroundings and activities. These practices will be beginner friendly with lots of options according to your body and your needs. Our practices will vary between morning yoga to gently wake-up and get the blood moving and evening practice to release tight muscles after our day and help you prepare for a great nights sleep. Our daily yoga will help us stay balanced, feeling good and present during our trip whether we are practicing in the forest or beach.

Day 1: Arrival Nicaragua – Travel to Matagalapa

Welcome to Nicaragua! We are picked up from the airport for our 2.5 hour drive to Matagalpa.

Our drive continues into the heart of the coffee growing northern mountains of Matagalpa, a province is very productive as it produces beef, cheese, coffee, cacao, flowers, corn, a variety of fruit as well as being a very popular destination for eco-tourism in Nicaragua. After the Cuban Revolution many families of the cigar aristocracy moved to Miami and later to Estelí with their precious seeds from their homeland and soon begun turning out world-renowned cigars. The cigar business is sunk deep into the rich soil, and the handful of familial cigar dynasties that first came to Nicaragua 30 years ago are still here, and still rolling world-class cigars.

Tonight we will be staying at a breath-taking private lodge nestled in the highlands of Matagalpa. Our beautiful accommodation is on a working coffee farm nestled in the Arenal Nature Preserve. A cloud forest is much like a rainforest, but much of the moisture comes not from falling rain but from the condensation left by the nearly constant cloud cover that blankets the tops of mountains in many parts of the tropics. Most of the Nicaraguan cloud forest lies between 1300 and 1500 metres (4200 – 5000 feet) above sea level and our lodge is situated along the continental divide between the Pacific and Atlantic lowlands.

Day 2: Hiking Nature Reserve & Coffee Farm Tour

This morning we have a guided walk along the trails of the Arenal Nature Reserve learning about the flora and keeping our eyes open for monkeys, agouti, variety bird species, strangler figs, and sloths.

Have you ever wondered about the process your favourite morning beverage goes through before it reaches your cup? In the afternoon we will learn all about the coffee process from bean to cup at the Selva Negra Coffee Estate.

Day 3: Chocolate Factory & Waterfall Hike

Today we will visit a factory where some of the best chocolates in Nicaragua are made using organic cocoa from small Matagalpan growers. The cacao tree has been cultivated in South and Central America for almost four thousand years. We will get to observe the chocolate making process – from roasting, peeling and milling of cacao to the actual chocolate making with adding flavours and forming the chocolate into different shapes.

This afternoon we have the opportunity to hike to a nearby beautiful waterfall.

Our morning flow yoga practice will open up and hips and wake up our core to prepare us for our afternoon hike.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Travel to Granada – Masaya Volcano

This morning we depart from Matagalpa and make our way Granada. We will make scenic stops along the way including a visit to Volcan Masaya. The Masaya Volcano National Park comprises an area of 54 km² and includes two volcanoes and five craters. The volcanoes have erupted several times in history, and were feared by both the indigenous people and the Spanish conquerors. The Spanish baptized the active volcano “La Boca del Infierno” or “The Mouth of Hell” and planted a cross on the crater lip in the 16th century in order to exorcise the Devil.

We’ll also stop at Coyotepe Hill which was a significant engagement during the United States occupation of Nicaragua from August through November 1912 during the insurrection staged by Minister of War General Luis Mena against the government of President Adolfo Díaz.

Central America’s oldest European settlement and arguably Nicaragua’s most picturesque town, Granada. Granada is a gem that is easy to love with much of its colonial architecture intact after being painstakingly restored. The Spanish built Granada strategically on Lake Cocibolca (Lake Nicaragua) adjacent to the indigenous community of Xalteva, whose residents suddenly found themselves working for their new foreign “visitors”. Granada quickly grew into a trade hub with a Spanish merchant class developing as a result.

Today’s Yoga Practice:
Our evening practice will be a slow flow class focusing on unwinding, we will release any tightness from yesterdays hike and any tension from travelling to our new location.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Overnight: Granada Hotel

Day 5: Granada & Las Isletas

Feeling refreshed after yoga, we head out for a city tour of Granada which has recently blossomed into a mecca for travellers. Boasting some of the best colonial architecture, Spanish language schools, and restaurants in Central America. This morning we have a guided tour of some of the highlights of Granada and enjoy the colourful facades lining the narrow streets.

This afternoon we visit Granada’s Isletas by boat. This peninsula and its 365 small islands where formed 20,000 years ago by a massive volcanic explosion! Today it is a unique place where prominent Nicaraguan have their vacation houses and a local fishing community makes its living. The nature is beautiful with a lots of birdlife and amazing views of the volcanoes and Lake Nicaragua. The Spanish built a fortress in the 17th Century to stop pirate attacks on the City of Granada.

Today’s Yoga Practice:
This morning practice will be an energizing flow class to get us on our bodies and ready to explore our new city!

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Overnight: Granada Hotel

Day 6: Los Pueblos Blancos & Pineapple Farm

We continue travelling to the nearby villages called Los Pueblos Blancos in order to visit to some of the artisan workshops. All these precious little villages have colonial period houses and churches and are home to a hardworking, indigenous population. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, they organized artisans in small workshops for export. The artisan tradition is carried on today as the region is well known for its artisans, metalworkers, leatherworkers, carpenters, painters, and musicians. No other region of Nicaragua is as blessed with a sense of artistry and creativity as Masaya and the surrounding villages. Many of the handicrafts found in markets throughout the country are Masayan: handwoven hammocks, terra cotta pottery, musical instruments, and more.

Pineapples don’t grow on trees? I remember the first time I saw a pineapple plantation and it blew my mind. We’ll have the chance this afternoon to visit a pineapple farm.

Today’s Yoga Practice:
Tonight’s practice will be more restorative and focus on yoga poses that help us sleep.
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
